Peter Brook created the Indian epic about the birth of civilization in his theatrical performance, which premiered in 1985 in Avignon Festival and later toured throughout all the world. The preparation of this huge project took practically fifteen years to develop. The film adaptation is from 1988.
          Brook´s Mahabharata is a journey through history, myths and religions of ancient India. The apprehensions, emotions, variances and secret dreams of the modern man are reflected in this film. The universal validity of this epic's mission are stressed by the international cast of actors made up of artists from many nationalities and races. Ryszard Cieslak, a famous actor from Grotowski´s Laboratory, is one of many actor's stars of this production.
          Jean Claude Carriére belongs among the best script writers in the world. He collaborated on the six films of Luis Buòuel (including the film La charme discret de la bourgeoisie). He also wrote scripts to the films Taking Off by Miloš Forman, Die Blechtrommel by Volker Schlöndorff and The Incredible Lightness of Being by Philip Kaufman.
