Those Who Don't Go to Balls will Soon Start

Friday's first Revolver Revue and Torst Publishing House Ball in Prague's Archa Theatre went on until late Saturday morning. In the light decadent atmosphere, the first big "social event" opened up the dedicated space that was reconstructed last year.

Zdeněk Novák, the Master of Ceremonies, welcomed everyone with a bang of the gong. It was possible for those who were present, and already sitting in the big hall, to follow the welcoming ceremony on the big-screen projection located above the stage; Novák introduced the names of those guests and revealed their professions. It is also necessary to add that every third person knew the MC by name. Actors dominated the evening, and we didn't meet any politician.
Director of the Archa Theatre Ondřej Hrab opened the event and after him - words tied - Martin Choura. The role of the opening dance by the group B.K.S. (Bude konec světa - It will be end of the world - last year's winner of the Revolver Revue prize) was assuming, presenting, in their costumes and make-up, some ritual dance of friendship. They even utilized the technical possibilities - such as lifting one of the ramps in the center of the hall.
Kabinet Music of Brno sang hits from the sixties in their period costumes and hair styles. There wasn't a dry spectator's eye in the house when they sang the songs of Helena Vondráčková, Petr Spálený, Marta Kubišová, Yvona Přenosilová and Karla Gott. Kabinet Music once again confirmed the immortality of some of the good old songs.
The puppet theatre of Petr Nikl had a great success. With the help of his magical puppets, little animals, lamps and indescribable creatures, vessels filled with coloured liquids, and candles, accompanied by the sounds of the stupefying sonnet from Twin Peaks, Nikl created an incredible atmosphere in the big hall. The performance was a magnet.
The highlight of the evening was awarding of the annual Revolver Revue prize to Jan Placák for his positive influence in his second-hand bookshop and gallery Ztichlá klika. The real thanks to him appeared in the Revolver Revue with the reproductions of almost forgotten artists - Zdeněk Tůma, Zdeněk Bouše, Hanes Reegen and others.
A quite unexpected event to take place during the ball was when Ivan Kral, Czech rocker who lived several years in America and former co-performer of Patti Smith, appeared, even when he was interrupted by the already legendary agent provocateur, poet Ivan "Magor" Jirous.
Lovers of good literature were on hand during the tombola where there were thousands of book prizes on hand, for example of authors Vítězslav Nezval, Viktor Stoilov, Roger Scruton, and Ivan Jelínek. The main prize was given by Ivan Diviš, Jiří Kolář and Petr Nikl.
The dulcimer music of Jožka Fečo played in the second half of the evening, and in the final hours, the hall became a discotheque. The ball was supported by various sponsors, such as the Měník Wine from Lobkowicz. There was also the thought of ordering a taxi. In short, the ball shone and started a new tradition of non-traditional good times.
