Scratching the Inner Fields

Choreography that lingers on the border of fantasy and imagination
February 10 - 12, 2002 at 8 p.m.

One of the world's best contemporary dance theatre groups comes again to Archa Theatre, already for the fourth time, with its newest performance. The main theme of the work is imagination, intuition, feelings and rememberences - the "inner domain" from where we draw strength and inspiration. The choreography is based upon the text of the original fairytale by the well known Belgian author Peter Verhelst. The music is composed by the breakbeat and electronic music composer known as the Eavesdropper. The sound design was created by the German sound designer and experimentor Josh Martin, who also performs live accommpaniment on electronic instruments. Five dancers and two actors make up the Ultima Vez group this time through. Choreography and direction: Wim Vandekeybus.

…a performance about the power of elusive intuition: not as in knowledge but as in natural talent

…a performance that investigates the limit between pain and pleasure: how the one barely exists without the other

…a performance as a search for the sound of memory: how the pleasure of the present feeds on the memory of yesterday's pain

…a performance as the alienation of the voice of desire, tactile and indirect

…and finally, a performance about imagination as a survival instinct

Wim Vandekeybus

Ultima Vez is a prime example of the summit of the current world dance theatre based on their expressiveness, dynamism, physical power and energy that borders the limits of human possibilities. The artists work with aggression, roughness, visual and sound shock, and madness which combine with technical precision and perfection. Their performances are a narrative thanks to the complex result of movement, picture and music.
In the past, we have presented the performances "Mountains Made of Barking" (1995), "What the Body does not Remember" (1997) and "In Spite of Wishing and Wanting" (2000).
