In Spite of Wishing and Wanting

Choreography for Eleven Men
Flemish dance ensemble, Ultima Vez, performs for the third time in the Archa Theatre. The new production of choreographer Wim Vandekeybus entitled "In Spite of Wishing and Wanting", is the first collaborative project with American musician David Byrne, founder of the group Talking Heads, who composed the original music for this performance.
The production, performed by eleven male dancers, is enhanced with the assistance of a film projection. The idea behind this fusion of art was inspired by Byrne's concert in the Archa Theatre.
Choreographer Wim Vandekeybus is originally a filmmaker and understands the art of film as a means of staging distant worlds and presenting what is not possible in a theatrical medium. The main theme of the performance is the fear arising from an obsession of someone or something. Even this fear has another face - the longing to transform itself to someone or something. The fear and longing circulate around one point. Longing and internal tension are expressed by physical movement. It is a communication between the internal and external worlds, between "me" and the "other".

"What do you do? Who are you? We ask this questions every day. When we realize somebody's longings, the questions change. What would you like to do? What would you like to be? The desire compares us with that which we are not, what we have not had, what we cannot do or what does not take heart. Will not the desire die, when is it satisfied?"

Ultima Vez is a prime example of the summit of the current world dance theatre based on their expressiveness, dynamism, physical power and energy that borders the limits of human possibilities. The artists work with aggression, roughness, visual and sound shock, and madness which combine with technical precision and perfection. Their performances are a narrative thanks to the complex result of movement, picture and music.

In the past, we have presented the performances "Mountains Made of Barking" (in 1995) and " What the Body does not Remember" (in 1997).
