Cirkus Cirkör & URGA
Press Release from March 26, 2001

Swedish new circus comes to Archa Theatre - Cirkus Cirkör & URGA on April 4th and 5th, 2001

France is not the only home of the "new" circus. The performance Cirkus Cirkör & URGA on April 4th and 5th, 2001, gives evidence that Sweden has also become a country devoted to this kind of theatre.
The production of Cirkus Cirkör is a wonderful mixture of Swedish and international artists - acrobats, tight-rope walkers, aerial acrobats, mime artists, a wizard, a juggler, a contortionist and a magician who makes the impossible - possible. Artists are sealed inside a baloon; they balance on a tight wire; they struggle in a boxing ring; or they work with a jumping pole. Also on stage - the amazing URGA! - a band whose roots are found in rock, ska, reggae, folk, dub and punk! Their music, combined with theatre and circus, creates a show that is filled with magic, action, humour and beauty.
This performace is directed by Lars Rudolfsson, one of Sweden's foremost theatre directors. It has been a tremendous success since its opening in Stockholm in the spring of 2000. The company is truly international: the artists come from Finland, France, Sweden, Mongolia, Canada and USA.
Cirkus Cirkör began in 1995 with the desire to cross over the performing arts offered by the new circus culture and to place Sweden on the world map of contemporary circus. Today, Cirkör is the centre for Scandinavian circus artists and supporters with the sky as their only limit. Cirkör is inspired by other circus groups such as Cirque du Soleil, Archaos and Cirque Plume, as well as from street-theatre, dance, film and everyday life. The "new" circus has roots in traditional circus, but extends beyond the limits of a cirkus chapiteau. It doesn´t need animal drill or dressage as a mean of expression - it simply builds on the remarkable performances of artists, acrobats and clowns who can create whatever you want.
