Yellow Submarine 2001
Press Release from February 19, 2001

Now for the fifth time, the critic's award and the three day activitiy of the Yellow Submarine, which awards the prizes of the Independent association of musical critics Periskop, will take place in the Archa Theatre from February 23 - 25, 2001.
The six member association of musical critics annually present three "Yellow Submarine" awards for extraordinary musical activities which have taken place over the last year. In addition, there is also an award for "a greater step in the musical scene", entitled Man walking through the wall.

The recipients this year:

Petr Váša & Ty syčáci, primarily for their poetic beats contained in the album "Máj v dubnu" (Indies Rec.)

Öggg, the creator of electronic composition and remixes (known from the compilation albums of "Future Sound of Prague" or "BeatCase", the remix composer of Ohm Square, Ivan Kral or Tata Bojs) - primarily for his concentrated personal approach to the most recent technological advances in music.

Táborská Cesta (Tábor's Way): The music and art scene of the South Czech town of Tábor has recently become one of the important centers of contemporary creation in the Czech Republic. The most important project is the cultural association, Cesta (Way) (www.cesta.cz), ie. - originating from San Francisco - Hilary Binder and Chris Rankin from the author's free-punk duo Sabot (drums, bass guitar). The groups Waawe ("psychedelic-noise soup with an ambient broth from its own recipe") and Deverova chyba (Dever's Mistake), which called their own style of Czech songs as "jazzcore", will be presented together with Sabot during this year's Yellow Submarine.

Vladimír Merta: the fifth Man walking through the Wall - singer and fantastic musician; a poet of uneasy pictures and also the life-time founder of Czech-Moravian, Gypsies and Jewish traditional music.

The authors of this year's Submarine Awards are: Petr Nikl, Stanislav Diviš, Martin Velíšek and Milan Cais. Last year, the award was a physical prize, but this year, the award will take the form of an animated film projected on the bodies of the winners. The film will be created by animator Maria Procházková.

All performances during this festival are non-traditional and somewhat exceptional. The group Ty syčáci will present parts of their new album. There will also be a special stage presentation of the studio composition of Öggg. Vladimír Merta will perform in a special performance with musicians Peter Binder (guitar), Jaroslav Kořán (drums) and others. The evenings will be enhanced with the film portraits of Petr Váša (Circus - chaos - minaret, dir. J. Fedurco) and the duo Sabot (Hilary and Chris on the Way, dir. F. Remunda).

On Sunday, February 25, the festival will be come to a close with the American cult film Stop Making Sense. Director Jonathan Demme (Silence of the Lambs) captured the concert of David Byrne and the New York group The Talking Heads when they were at their peak.

The independent association of musical critics Periskop is created by Ivan Hartman (UNI), Pavel Klusák (independent person), Petr Korál (Rock & Pop), Karel Prokeš (dramaturg of the festival Valašský Špalíček and independent publicist), Tomáš Seidl (Esquire) and Vladimír Vlasák (Mladá fronta Dnes).
